While mulching does indeed help beautify any area with foliage, its real value comes from suppressing weeds and pests, helping retain moisture in the soil, and keeping the ground warmer in winter and cooler in the summer. Plus, the mulch forms a protective area around trees, heading off mower damage to the trunks as well as mower blight (the over-cut, balding area of grass around the tree base) and weed-eater blight (damage to the tree trunk from repeated string trimmer hits).
